THE SPIRIT OF SPORT
UNEARTHLY
The Spirit of Sport
Photography: Gary Steer : Digital imaging/ printing: Peter Freeman
An exhibition exploring the unchartered area of sport, where art is commonly lost. Traditionally, sport and art are like isolated tribes on different islands throwing the occasional javelin at each other. The exhibition looks at how sport is tribal, combative ritual, e.g. cycling and martial arts. It searches for the common ground between sport and art – creativity, pleasure, energy, the senses, courage, appreciation of beauty. It looks at about 25 different sports, particularly those that lend themselves to impressionistic interpretation, where the sport is like performance art e.g. cycling, gymnastics, rowing, swimming, ice skating, skiing, the martial arts. The exhibition is an applause to “the unknown athletes”, to whom participation is what matters most.
Unearthly : Meyer Gallery
Hidden in the complexity of nature are ethereal, visual secrets.
Gary Steer searches for the impressions and illusions in nature – mist, mirage, reflections, tricks of light, patterns – and turns them into photographic works of art. He covers forests, rivers, oceans, desert lakes, mountains – captured as landscapes, aerial and close-ups. His work is very different from conventional nature photography. It is of the earth but unearthly.
